A Thai Retirement Visa can be applied for either in Thailand or overseas.If obtained within Thailand it is officially referred to as a Non-Immigrant O-Long Stay Visa and if obtained overseas it is referred to as a Non-Immigrant OA-Long Stay Visa.

The Thai Retirement Visa:

  • May be valid either for a single entry or multiple entries.
  • Entitles the holder to stay in Thailand for a period of 1 year.
  • Renewable annually. Renewal process may be done in Thailand (requirements for the visa renewal still apply).

REQUIREMENTS FOR THAI RETIREMENT VISA:

Applicants must be 50 years of age or over.

Applicants must meet the following financial requirements:

a) Security deposit of THB 800,000 in a Thai Bank Account for more than 2 months prior to visa application, or;
b) Monthly income or pension of at least THB 65,000. An affidavit from the foreign embassy or consulate is required as proof of the income, or;
c) Combination of the Thai bank account and yearly income of at least 800,000 THB in total.

Note: Supporting documents as proof of the security deposit in a Thai bank account are as follows:

Updated bank book or passbook.

Bank letter stating that the money had been deposited to the bank account from an overseas source for not less than 2 months.

Other documents that may be requested:*
a) Police Clearance
b) Medical Certificate

*Not normally required if a Thai Retirement Visa application is submitted inside Thailand, although the Thai embassy or consulate may request these documents before issuing the visa.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES FOR RETIREMENT VISA IN THAILAND:

The Thai Retirement Visa application can be processed either in Thailand or your home country.

It is important that you give proper attention to the requirements and other factors surrounding the entire procedure to eliminate possibility of unsuccessful visa application.

The basic guidelines when applying for a Thai Retirement Visa are as follows:

NOTE:Expats with a visa exemption stamp or a tourist visa may apply for a retirement visa if they have already met the requirements for the non-immigrant O visa and for 1-year extension visa applications. This can be done at the immigration office in Thailand.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

90-day Reporting

Thai Retirement Visa holders must report their current residential address to the Thai Immigration Office every 90 days.

Address registration can be done either:
(a) by mail.
(b) in person at the Thai Immigration Office.
(c) assignment of an agent to do this on your behalf through a Power of Attorney.

If the Thai Retirement Visa Holder is not in Thailand when the report is due, the counting of the 90-days begins from the re-entry date to Thailand.

Re-entry Permit
If there is a need to leave or return to Thailand during the year of the Thai Retirement Visa validity, a multiple re-entry permit is required to avoid visa cancellation.

Multiple entry permit is not required if the Expat does not plan to travel outside of Thailand during the period of visa validity.

If the Expat requires to travel overseas and return to Thailand, a re-entry permit can be requested at the nearest Thai Immigration Office or at the international airport before leaving Thailand.

Bank Account
The Thai Retirement Visa is valid for a year and renewal is subject to the same requirements as the initial application.

It is important to note that the required security deposit must be in the bank account for at least 3 months prior to visa renewal application.

Importation of Household Effects

Please note that according to the Thai Customs Bureau, importation of retiree personal effects to Thailand is not duty free.
